English: An asilid fly (robber fly or assassin fly) with common housefly prey, resting on a redwood gate while feeding (abdominal sucking pulsation could be seen). Photo with my iPhone 5 in Ontario, California, June 15, 2013. The asilidae have the body plan of mosquitoes but with powerful spiny legs and a short proboscis. Length was estimated 1.5 to 2 cm. The mystax and occular fringes on this species (not identified) can be seen. Wings are closely folded. The hunting forward-adaptation of the compound eyes reminds me a little of mantis shrimp. They are athletic: this one, when disturbed too much by me took rapid flight, taking its prey with it.
