Alpha particles do not travel very far, and are effectively stopped by the layer of dead skin on the outside of our bodies. However, alpha particles have a great deal of potential to cause harm. If they are released inside the body, as a result of inhaling or ingesting a dust that emits alpha particles they can cause damage to the lungs or digestive system |
