Summary

Description A U.S. Navy North American RA-5C Vigilante from Heavy Reconnaissance Squadron RVAH-1 Smokin´ Tigers landing aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence (CVA-62). In the foreground is a Douglas A-4E Skyhawk (BuNo 149992) from Attack Squadron VA-72 Blue Hawks. Both Squadrons were assigned to Carrier Air Wing 7 (CVW-7) aboard the Independence for a deployment to Vietnam from 10 May to 13 December 1965. During this deployment, the A-4E 149992 injested own 2.75-in rocket debris over the Thanh Hoa Province, North Vietnam, on 13 September 1965. The pilot could reach the Gulf of Tonkin where he ejected and was rescued by a U.S. Navy helicopter.
