English: Figure5: Under conditions of moderate to low expression levels, IRGMs constantly survey for signals such as pathogen entry, starvation or increase in levels of IFNγ.Upon encounter with pathogen, mitochondrial fission pathways are turned on leading to autophagy ,microbial clearance promoting host cell survival. When highly expressed,IRGM binds to mitochondrial membrane bound lipid, cardiolipin and translocates into mitochondria which leads to depolarization and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. This stimulates autophagy independent but pro-apoptotic factors bax/Bak dependent host cell death.
