English: Retired Army Capt. Leslie Smith takes her place on stage with her service dog, Issac, during a dog placement ceremony at the Naval Consolidated Brig, Dec. 1. Smith was the guest speaker at the ceremony in which Marine Cpl. David Donchess,a wounded service member, received his service dog, Ruth. Smith contracted a blood disorder while on duty in Bosnia in 2002. She lost her left leg and eye sight as a result. Issac has given her physical and mental support. Smith travels extensively on behalf of organizations such as Wounded Warrior Project, Iraq Star Foundation, Army Wounded Warrior Program, Operation Heroes, and Disabled Sports USA. Carolina Canines For Service is a non-profit health and human services organization that train service doges for people with disabilities. Through this program in partnership with the NAVCON Brig, military prisoners are taught to raise and train the service dogs that are provided to veterans with disabilities by Carolina Canines free of charge. Since the program's inception, 14 wounded service members have received their service dogs. |
