Description
English: Portrait of Ulysses S. Grant, oil on canvas, height - 30 inches, width - 25.5 inches, at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. Sketch of Ulysses S. Grant at the The Abraham Lincoln Foundation of the Union League of Philadelphia. Was presented by Union League member Edward C. Knight to The Union League of Philadelphia, a patriotic society founded in 1862 to support Abraham Lincoln and the Union during the American Civil War, at a Union League exhibition. Note: Arthur Edwin Bye observed, ”Waugh has interpreted Grant at his best, in warm, rich, well-blended tones, with earnest expression. It is the man, not the hero nor President, who is presented here.”
