James C. Edgerton was an army lieutenant and pilot who helped get America's airmail service off the ground. Edgerton was one of a group of army air corps pilots who flew the mail for the Post Office Department from May 18 - August 8, 1918. On the first day of the service Edgerton flew from the mail from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Washington, DC. This photograph shows Lt. Edgerton posed in front of his Curtiss JN-4H "Jenny" mail airplane with his younger sister. National Postal Museum, Curatorial Photographic Collection Photographer: Unknown.

Lieutenant James C. Edgerton holding roses given to him by his sister Elizabeth after finishing the last stretch of the airmail flight from Philadelphia to Washington. He flew the last leg of the first regular airmail route flight from DC to Philadelphia to New York and back. Edgerton had only one emergency landing in his 52 airmail flights.
