Notes Questo dipinto raffigura la scena dopo la discesa di Cristo dalla croce e prima della sua sepoltura. La Vergine Maria si china sul corpo di Cristo mentre Maria Maddalena si inginocchia ai suoi piedi. Giuseppe d'Arimatea, Nicodemo e le donne dolenti completano il cerchio dei dolenti. Sul retro del dipinto è impresso il sigillo della nobile famiglia Colonna di Roma. L'opera è elencata nell'inventario dei tesori d'arte del 1783 nel palazzo Colonna fuori Roma. Dal 1605 al 1606, Filippo, fratello di Rubens, fu segretario e bibliotecario del cardinale Ascanio Colonna (1559-1608), ed è probabile che il cardinale abbia commissionato questo dipinto. Successivamente fu ceduto al pittore Giuseppe Cades (1750 – 1799), di cui resta sul retro la dichiarazione di proprietà firmata.
