Summary

Description
English: The first Orange County jail was made of brick and sat on Orange Avenue. Wooden scaffolding beside the jail was used for hanging prisoners sentenced to death. This jail was used until 1884 on the corner of Orange Avenue and Washington Street at the cost of $10,700.

The new jail (pictured) was an imposing structure with a high picket fence enclosing an exercise yard for the inmates and an occasional old-fashioned hanging. In 1917, it was sold for $17,500 and torn down in 1919.
