DescriptionOld medicine shop on the Nakasendo historic route at Torii-no-moto in Shiga prefecture.jpg
English: The alternate year attendance scheme during the feudal period in Japan from 1600 to 1867 required the regional lords to travel to and from Tokyo (Edo) along designated routes that were controlled with gates or stations along the way. This photo from central Honshu in today's Shiga prefecture shows a section of the narrow and winding road at Toriinomoto to the north of Hikone, now paved at higher elevation than the original gravel road.
