Français : Le logis d’officiers au lieu historique national du Canada du Fort-Lennox a été construit en tant qu’élément intégral du fort et fait partie de l’infrastructure de logement aménagée à même les remparts pour loger la garnison britannique. Il accueillait maints officiers qui commandaient les divers régiments d’infanterie et d’artillerie déployés dans la région de Montréal.
Le logis d’officiers est étroitement lié à la stratégie de défense des frontières du Canada mise de l’avant entre 1820 et 1830. À la suite des expériences de la guerre de 1812-1814, les forces militaires britanniques ont révisé leur stratégie défensive pour parer aux attaques provenant du sud, par voie du lac Champlain et de la rivière Richelieu, et ont décidé de construire une nouvelle fortification à l’Île-aux-Noix. Le Fort-Lennox et les bâtiments qu’il renferme évoquent donc aussi les discussions d’ordre stratégique et tactique qui ont influencé le développement de la vallée du Haut-Richelieu. |
