Object history This is one of three breastplates presented to the Yandruwandha people of Cooper Creek in 1862 in appreciation of the help they gave explorers Robert O'Hara Burke, William John Wills and John King on their return from the Gulf of Carpentaria in April 1861. The Victorian Exploring Expedition, later known as the Burke and Wills Expedition, remains one of the most celebrated journeys of the 'heroic era' of Australian land exploration. The huge expedition led by Burke left Melbourne on 20 August 1860. Burke achieved his goal of crossing the continent, but he and Wills and John Gray died on the return journey. The sole survivor of the party, John King, was cared for by the Yandruwandha until found by a relief party in September 1861. The breastplate is one of very few objects that document cross-cultural appreciation of the Aboriginal people who cared for and taught survival skills to explorers who did not have the skills necessary to survive in the bush.
