Notes The Gemäldegalerie describes this painting as the portrait of René Frémin (1672-1744). Based on later portraits of Frémin and Nicolas Coustou (1658-1733), this painting bears a closer resemblance to Coustou. However, Coustou would have been 55 at the time of the painting; Frémin was 41. If the painting is a true resemblance, the identity of the sitter would favor the younger man, Frémin, and the Gemäldegalerie.
