Summary

Description
English: Somerset House was built to serve as government offices and to house learned institutions in the late-18th century. The architect was William Chambers (1726-1796). The Navy Board was given prominent rooms in the south and west wings, with access provided by way of this oval staircase (the Navy Stair), later renamed after Admiral Lord Nelson. It was severely damaged during a bombing raid in 1940 and subsequently restored by Sir Albert Richardson.
