editNelson Reithmaier (born April 13, 1979), is an American Flight Mechanic in the United States Coast Guard, best known for his dramatic and daring rescue of Alex Valero, a 43-year-old Honduran fisherman, working aboard the Erin Reese, an 83 foot fishing vessel. Nelson is and Eagle Scout and former member of BSA Scout Troop 213 sponsored by Grace Lutheran Church. After graduating from Northeast High School in 1997, Nelson attended St. Petersburg College for several years. Nelson is also the Grandson of the infamous American author, Larry Reithmaier
