Summary

Description

Somehow, in all my years of living near Concord, Massachusetts, I had somehow missed seeing Mourning Victory, which is more commonly called the Melvin Memorial. The sculpture was done by Daniel Chester French to honor three brothers who died during the Civil War. The statue was commissioned by a surviving brother, who was a childhood friend of the sculptor. French, by the way, is the same artist who created the Minuteman statue at Old North Bridge. He also created the statue of President Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial.

French made a second copy of this piece for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but that version shows the right arm extended.
