Description
Prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov (1782-1856) was raised in London, where his father was the Russian Ambassador. He sat to Lawrence in late 1821. He served as a military commander in the Napoleonic Wars and the Caucasus, becoming Field Marshal in 1856 at the end of his life. He was appointed Governor General of the new southern Russian provinces in 1823, and in 1844 commander-in-chief and viceroy of the Caucasus. He built palaces in Odessa and the Crimea, brought steamboats to the Black Sea, and prosecuted successful military campaigns throughout the area. His wife is remembered as the inspiration for some of Alexander Pushkin's poetry.
