Summary

Description

The Metropolitan Hotel, nestled in the corner of the old North Melbourne Meat Market, now reinvented as Arts House Meat Market, has seen many incarnations since its auspicious beginnings at the height of Victorian times in 1888.

Its builder, George Johnston, was either a very careful or a very prudent builder, in-as-much as it took him 6 years to complete the building!

Recently made famous as the pub where the then Chief Commissioner of Police Christine Nixon caught up with friends for dinner, abandoning her post as Commander-in-Chief during the worst bushfire event in Australia's history - the Black Saturday Bushfires.
