Summary

Description
English: During WWII Mel Hirsch was a Navigator assigned to the 13th Troop Carrier Squadron, nicknamed the Thirsty 13th, and in 1945 was stationed on the island of Biak in what was then the Netherlands East Indies, later called New Guinea. The squadron had two basketball teams - one of officers including Mel, and one of enlisted men. The squadron was part of the 403rd Troop Carrier Group, which had its own headquarters team, and the 63rd and 64th TCS camped next to these also with teams. In March-April 1945 there was a tournament among the 8 total teams, and the final game is shown here, coincidentally with both teams from the 13th TCS - its officers shirtless, and enlisted men in shirts. The enlisted men won. Pictured are Beacorn, Foote (played basketball at San Diego State - died in a plane crash July 29, 1945), Burdiss, Morey, Carrasco, Senta, and Hirsch. In the background is the Enlisted Men's Club. The exact location is in the book "The Thirsty 13th" by Seth Washburne.
