Summary

Description
English: Mauricio Rocha

Response by Barry Bergdoll and Luis Carranza Mexico-City based architect Mauricio Rocha presents the work of his firm Taller de Arquitectura-Mauricio Rocha, including the 14,000 sqm complex Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired that features courtyards, a store, a “tifloteca-sonoteca” (a sound and touch gallery), arts-and-crafts workshops, classrooms facing a garden, and a series of double-height volumes that house a library, gymnasium-auditorium, and swimming pool. In Oaxaca, the firm produced the Oaxaca School of Plastic Art, another complex that features building made of stone and rammed earth. This lecture is held on the occasion of Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955–1980, "a complex overview of the positions, debates, and architectural creativity from Mexico and Cuba to the Southern Cone between 1955 and the early 1980s" that highlights architectural drawings, architectural models, vintage photographs, and film clips alongside newly commissioned models and photographs. Curator Barry Bergdoll and Visiting Professor Luis Carranza offer responses to the work. Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955–1980 is on display March 29–July 19, 2015.
