English: Mapperton Manor House, Dorset, England. A lion sitting atop a barley-twist column, holding a shield displaying the coat of arms of Robert Morgan (Morgan of Mapperton), who built the surviving house: Argent, on a bend cotised sable a fleur-de-lys between two cinquefoils of the field on a chief azure a cross patoncé between two arrows or (Visitation of Dorset, 1565, pp.32-3, Pedigree of "Morgan of South Mapperton", but with a third cinquefoil in place of the fleur-de-lys visible here [1]). One of two similar items on the gable end of the Tudor wing. Compare with similar Tudor heraldic compositions at Hampton Court Palace, the "King's Beasts". Arms of Robert Morgan also sculpted on chimneypiece of Great Chamber[2]
