| Description | In 1964, the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) ran a public Subway Map Competition. One of the winners was R. Raleigh D'Adamo, whose design provided the basis for the NYCTA's adoption of colour-coding by route from 1967 onwards. The original map was destroyed by the NYCTA in the 1980s, but a small colour photograph of it was found fifty years on, in 2014. From that photograph, Reka Komoli has reconstructed the handdrawn map as a vector graphics file (2015). The image shown here is a low-resolution raster rendering of that map.
