Summary edit

A fresco in Ascension Cathedral of the Pechersky Ascension Monastery (Nizhny Novgorod) depicting Venerable Macarius' Miracle of the Moose. The text below the fresco says, "Чудо Святаго Преподобнаго Макарiя о Лосе при Исходе изъ Казанскаго Плененiя" ("Venerable Saint Macarius' Miracle of the Moose during the Exodus from the Captivity in Kazan"). Part of the Moose's left ear has been clipped by the Saint, as per the description of the Miracle in "Life of Venerabe Macarius".

The photo is my own, and I would be glad to release it under any GFDL/CC license. But it is a derivative work, being a photo of a fresco, the copyright of which may be owned by the artist(s) (of the "Lik" Studio of Ivanovo, I believe), or the customer (Russian Orthodox Church or a subdivision of it). The fair use rationale is to illustrate depicting the Miracle of the Moose in the Orthodox iconography. The Orthodox don't go much for 3-dimensional work of art, so by definition, any icon or fresco is a two-dimensional work of art copyrighted by the artist of the customer (the church).

Article

Miracle of the Moose

Portion used

A large portion of one of the many wall painting decorating the cathedral. This is the section that is relevant to illustrating the event, as reported in the "Life" of the Saint.

Low resolution?

Fairly low, compared to the original painting (sever meters in size)

Purpose of use

To illustrate the supposed historical/hagiographic event, and its representation by the church

Replaceable?

The Russian Orthodox Church does not go for three-dimensional images much (or, anyhow, they don't survive well), so by definition, any icon or fresco is a two-dimensional work of art copyrighted by the artist of the customer (the church). Thus you need a photos of one of those if you want to illustrate the event, as represented by the church. Contacting a particular church painter, or his descendants, that may have hold the copyright, may be rather problematic. It may be possible to secure a photo of an icon or fresco depicting this event that was painted sufficiently long ago for PD_old to apply; but due to the destruction of much of the Church art in the 1920-30s due the church-state conflict in Russia - and the confiscation of the monasteries where St Macarius is venerated -, that would be very problematic as well.
