The monument was initially commissioned to commemorate the University’s Golden Jubilee celebrations in 1972. It was executed by Prof. Kakooza from the then School of Industrial and Fine Art. However, Prof. Kakooza did not complete it, allegedly because of political issues.
It lay unfinished- depicting only the mother bird without the chicks hatching from the eggs shells, until 1997 when a team of experienced artists led by Dr. Kyeyune, assisted by Prof. Kakooza’s son Patrick Lawasampijja & a host of other artists such as Dr. Rose Namubiru Kirumira,
