The X-55 was a technology demonstrator for the use of advanced composite materials in an aircraft fuselage. The chosen airframe was a Dornier 328-300 (Jet) which was fitted with a new, one piece fuselage, to which the original nose and wings were attached. It first flew in June 2009.
