Summary

Description
English: This is a JPEG format plan and architectural drawing of a historic Indian temple or monument. An alternate SVG format (scalable vector graphics) version of this file – for web graphics, design studies, print, dynamic and interactive applications – has also been uploaded to wikimedia commons.

The drawing:

  • This is the floor plan of the group of temples.
  • Delmal, also spelled Dilmal, was once a major city in northern Gujarat with numerous Hindu and Jain temples. Except for a few, most were too ruined a form during the 19th-century survey of the site. The Limboji or Limbaja Mandir is beautifully carved (though mutilated with chopped faces and limbs).
  • One group called the Limboji Mata Devbhumi – sometimes referred to as Limbaja Mataji Tirtha – consists of five temples (main shrine is dedicated to Shaktism, Hindu goddess), others to Vaishnavism, Sauraism (Surya) and Shaivism. It is an active temple. The temples open to the north.
  • After his survey of this temple group, Henry Cousens wrote, "The surrounding smaller shrines [of Dilmal], which were appendages to an older central temple, still remain in good preservation and, by their careful finish and abundant detail, show that they were constructed at a period when Hindu architecture was in the zenith of its excellence."
  • The temple's architectural plan follows the square and circle principle found in historic Sanskrit texts.
  • GPS location of the monument:
23° 38′ 31″ N, 71° 59′ 38.2″ E Kartographer map based on OpenStreetMap.View this and other nearby images on: OpenStreetMapinfo
  • The relative scale and relative dimensions in this architectural drawing are close to the actual but neither exact nor complete. The plan illustrates the design and layout, but some intricate details or parts of the temple may not be shown. In cases where exact measurements were not feasible, the drawing uses best approximations and rounds the best measurements feasible.
