Maugher Beach Lighthouse stands at the end of a curving beach on McNabs Island, at the entrance to Halifax harbour. The beach was named after Joshua Maugher, a rum distiller and merchant who used the beach to dry fish. It is also known as "Hangman's Beach" because the Royal Navy used it to hang the bodies of executed mutineers as a warning to crews of other ships entering the harbour.
The first light was lit here in 1828, from a granite Martello Tower with a red roof. The present lighthouse was built in 1941.
