Stories of camp-life, long marcheshardships of the campaign, and anecdotes concerningGeneral Shermans private life and intercourse withhis old comrades enliven the pages of this volume.Side by side stand with him other brilliant heroes inthe nations struggle, and a picture of him as a manamong men is presented. The demonstration of sympathy and sorrow whenhis death occurred has scarcely been paralleled in thiscountry. Sherman was loved by everybody, as wellas admired. His death struck home to the heart ofthe nation. All classes of citizens, including thePresident, members of the Cabinet, army and navalofficers, merchants, farmers, professional men, therich, the poor, vied with each other at his funeral *.ntelling of his glory and in honoring his memory.
