Summary

Description

Town Hall, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Designed by Cuthbert Brodrick, built 1853-1858.

Showing tympanum by John Thomas. The central figure is Athena (larel wreath, distaff, judicial chair, Leeds owls), representing Leeds. From left, the other four main figures are Industry (anvil and cloth), Poetry and Music (faun's head and flower-swag), Fine Arts (Corinthian capital and Minerva bust), and Science (compass, globe and tools). (Source: Leodis)

The tympanum contains homages to Brodrick and the Mawer Group, namely the Corinthian capital for Brodrick's architecture, and the flower swag in the style of the Mawer Memorial - in memory of Robert Mawer.

This is the central Athena figure.
