| Description |
La cour centrale du palais de Thirumalai Nayak Le palais du roi Thirumalai (1623-1659), le plus grand souverain Nayak, a été construit en 1636 à Madurai. Il a été conçu dans un style hybride indo-moghol, en partie par un architecte italien. Lorsque la capitale du royaume a été déplacée à Tiruchirapalli, le palais a été en partie détruit puis abandonné. Les anglais, lors de la colonisation, en ont restauré une partie (environ le quart) vers 1870. Le centre du palais était occupé par une grande cour rectangulaire entourée de galeries voûtées de 20m de haut, soutenues par des piliers monumentaux, caractéristique de l'architecture de la dynastie Nayak. Cette cour restaurée sert à des représentations artistiques (photo) Le décor des voutes (stuc, peintures...) est de grande qualité, il a été reproduit à l'identique au XIXè siècle. Un musée de sculptures d'époque Chola a été installé dans l'ancienne salle de danse : le Natakasala mais il est malheureusement très mal entretenu.
