Introduced, cool-season, annual sparsely to hairy herb 15 - 45 cm tall. Stems are square, hollow, green to purple and root at the nodes when in contact with the ground. Leaves are egg-shaped, lobed and/or with rounded teeth along the margins. Lower leaves are stalked; upper leaves are stalkless and their bases clasp the stem. Flowers are clustered in groups of 6 - 12, in the forks of the upper leaf pairs; appearing to ring the stem. Petals are pink/red to purple, sometimes with darker spots, fused, tube-like and 12 - 20 mm long; 2-lipped; upper lip hooded, lower lip 3-lobed. Flowering is mostly from April to November, but can be year-round. A native of western Asia and northern Africa, it is a widespread weed, especially of crops and disturbed sites.
