ebeen selected from Lala Gokal Chands Message ofthe Vedas, or from Bawa Chhajju Singhs Teachings xxvi INTRODUCTION of the Arya Samaj. In the absence of any qualifica-tions for translating the mantras for myself, I haveadopted their translations, which I believe to becorrect and very near to the translations made byWestern scholars. My acknowledgments are due to the authors fromwhose works I have largely quoted, and also to theeditors of the monthly and other periodicals which Ihave used. I am, besides, very grateful to ProfessorSidney Webb, LL.D., for having read my manuscriptand written for it a preface. It is to his learned wifeand himself that I am indebted for the encourage-ment which has stimulated me to write this book, and it is they who impressed upon me the necessityfor such a work in the interest of the Arya Samaj. Mythanks in addition are due to my friend, Mr. W. F.Westbrook, for having read the manuscript and madevaluable suggestions. Laj pat Rai. London.October 13th, 1914.
