Description
English: Painting by the artist from New Spain Miguel González depicting the battle during the Siege of Tenochtitlan in June 1521 in which Hernán Cortés, defeated with massive losses, was almost taken prisoner. The caption reads in Spainsh: "Great defeat suffered by the general captain Cortés in the water after making the brigantines, where they wanted to sacrifice him. His soldiers rescue him and two lost their lives defending him. Sixty soldiers are taken away to be sacrificed to their idols."
Español: Pintura por el artista novohispano Miguel González mostrando la batalla durante el sitio de Tenochtitlan en junio de 1521 en la cual Hernán Cortés, derrotado con enormes bajas, casi es capturado. El texto dice: "Gran desbarate que tuvo el capitán general Cortés dentro del agua después de haber hecho los bergantines, donde lo querían sacrificar. Socórrenlo los soldados, y dos pierden la vida en su defensa – llévanle sesenta soldados para sacrificar a sus ídolos".
