The fortress is the southernmost and western-most Judean site ever discovered. ... The site is on top of an isolated hill halfway between Gaza and Elath. It rises only above the surrounding plain but affords an unbroken view for at least 20 miles in every direction.

At the foot of the hill a clump of desert scrub surround the 10 wells of Ajrud. The wells, which still work and are used by the Bedouin today, date to antiquity. Meshel assumes it was these wells that originally drew travelers...
