n these excursions he had become acquaintedwith the Leonards. They had treated him andhis followers with uniform kindness, repairingtheir guns, and supplying them ^^ith such toolsas the Indians highly prized. Philip had be-come exceedingly attached to this family, andin gratitude, at the commencement of the war,had given the strictest orders that the Indiansshould never injure a Leonard. Apprehendingthat in a general assault upon the town hisfriends the Leonards might be exposed to dan-ger, he spread the shield of his generous protec-tion over the whole place.
