Summary
| Description | Junction of Peeks Brook Lane and Fernhill Road, Fernhill, Borough of Crawley, West Sussex, England. I am standing on Peeks Brook Lane facing north. Fernhill Road goes west from the junction (left foreground) to meet the B2036 Balcombe Road. On 5 January 1969, Ariana Afghan Airlines Flight 701 passed very low over this point (knocking off chimneys, TV aerials etc) immediately before crashing a few hundred yards to the west next to Fernhill Road. This area was in Surrey until 1990, when the Surrey/West Sussex boundary was aligned to the M23 (which runs behind the houses on the right). Accordingly it moved into the Borough of Crawley from the District of Tandridge (and Parish of Burstow) at that time. The crash site itself was actually in West Sussex though, by a matter of yards. |
