Image title	Das Gemälde Flussmündung ist ein typisches Spätwerk des holländischen Malers Jan van Goyen. Im Gegensatz zu dem farbenreichen Bild Dorflandschaft von 1625, das zum Frühwerk des Künstlers zählt und sich ebenfalls im Besitz der Kunsthalle Bremen befindet, baute der Maler das Gemälde Flussmündung virtuos in stark begrenzter Palette auf einer hellbraunen Untermalung auf. Im Vordergrund des Bildes sind zwei Segelboote und ein Fischerkahn zu sehen, im Hintergrund ein sich im Dunst verlierender Landstreifen – ein Motiv wie Van Goyen es immer wieder von seiner Heimat malte. Dominiert wird die Komposition von monumentalen Wolken, die drei Viertel der Bildoberfläche einnehmen und die Macht der Natur verdeutlichen. Der hohe Himmel gibt der Komposition Tiefe, die seitlich offenen Wasserflächen Weite, wobei Himmel und Erde zu verschmelzen scheinen. Van Goyen malte dieses Bild in freien, geradezu transparenten Pinselstrichen, die die Bewegung des Wassers und der Wolken widerspiegeln, ihn aber auch schnell arbeiten ließen. Auf einem freien Kunstmarkt, wie er sich in den Niederlanden im 17. Jahrhundert entwickelte, hieß es produktiv zu sein: Heute sind noch etwa 1200 Gemälde und 800 Zeichnungen von Van Goyen überliefert.
