  • Dansk: Den franske symbolisme-ekspert Caroline Boyle-Turner, der arrangerede Verkade-udstillingen i Amsterdam i 1989, har bestemt maleriet som et portræt af Verkade udført af vennen, den danske maler Mogens Ballin (jf. erklæring fra C B-T af 26. januar 2008; j.nr. 415-0453-2009). Imidlertid understreger portrættets karakter - med specielt det sidevendte blik - at der snarere er tale om et selvportræt af Verkade. Ang. identifikationen af den portrætterede som Verkade, sml. foto af Verkade i Ballins atelier i København i foråret 1894, gengivet i Caroline Boyle-Turner m.fl., Jan Verkade. Udstillingskatalog. Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh, Amsterdam 1989, p. 33 (afb. 24). Sml. endvidere Johan Rohdes raderede portræt af Verkade fra 1894 (geng. John Hunov (red.), Kunstnere omkring Taarnet. Skovgaard Museet, Viborg 1976, kat. 167).

  • Dansk: Fransk privateje; if. den seneste ejer har maleriet tidligere været i en privatsamling i Bretagne ikke langt fra Saint-Nolf nær Vannes, hvor Verkade og Ballin opholdt sig sammen foråret og sommeren 1892 (jf. e-mail af 30. nov. 2009 fra J-Y Rolland); købt 22. oktober 2009 fra kunsthandler Jean-Yves Rolland, Paris.
