Summary

Description
English: Irvine Butterfield Memorial The stone slab standing vertically beside the simple picnic site is carved in memory of the late Irvine Butterfield (1936 - 2009), a Yorkshireman who became one of the great mountain walkers of his adopted country, Scotland. He was one of the earliest to climb all of the Munros, and a founder of the John Muir Trust, and in 1986 he published 'The High Mountains of Britain and Ireland'. He had strong links to Rùm, having masterminded the restoration of the bothy at Dibidil, which makes it possible for walkers to explore the southern part of the island, and was also the author of 'Dibidil – A Hebridean Adventure'. The memorial bears a quotation from William Blake's 'Gnomic Verses': "Great things are done when men and mountains meet; This is not done by jostling in the street." It was carved by Bruce Walker, a sculptor from Kirriemuir, and stands close to the new path from the pier to the Otter Hide.
