Summary

Description

"A three-story, galleried Art Nouveau stairwell that was copied from one of Walsh's favorite White Star ocean liners" (Moeller, AIA Guide). I've never seen anything like this room, even in Newport.

Walsh's daughter Evalyn squandered her inheritance on follies like the Hope Diamond.

Yesterday, thanks to Passport DC, I ducked into the Indonesian Embassy just west of Dupont Circle. It was built by Black Hills gold miner Thomas Walsh as one of the most opulent houses in America -- which he only lived in for seven years. 1903, Henry Andersen
