by John Henry Smithand filled a mission to the SouthernStates in 1899-1901. He has been as-sociated with the State Board of Edu-cation for a number of years. CORNWALL, Claude C, a memberof the General Board of Y. M. M. I.A. from 1923 to 1927, was born Oct.24, 1889, in Mill Creek, Utah, the sonof Joseph A. Cornwall and Mary EllenSpencer. He was baptized Nov. 6,1897, and filled a mission to Califor-nia in 1919-1921. Bro. Cornwall is agraduate of the University of Utahand during his attendance theie didservice as a song and yell leader. Fora time he acted as superintendent ofthe Cottonwood Stake Y. M. M. L A.and in 1923 was appointed field secre-tary of the General Board of Y. M. M.L A. He was released from this posi-tion after having accepted a positionin 1926 to take charge of the recrea-tional activity on the S. S. A., and musical director of the or-ganization since 1929, was born Feb.23, 1888, in Mill Creek, Utah, the son BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA 235 of Joseph A. Cornwall and Mary EllenSpencer. He was baptized when eightyears old, studied at the L. D. S. Uni-versity, was supervisor of music inthe Granite School District for six-teen years, supervisor of music in theSan Luis, Colorado schools, and oneyear later entered the University ofUtah, and the Northwestern Univer-sity in Chicago, Illinois. He has beensupervisor of music in the Salt LakeCity Schools for six years, directedCivic Opera for six years, and wasappointed leader of the TabernacleChoir, Aug. 26, 1935. He is a worthymusician to follow in the footsteps ofthe great directors who have precededhim. He married Mary Haigh in 1913and they have seven children.
