Fotografia Ignacego Płażewskiego przedstawiająca dra Stefana Bagińskiego w laboratorium podczas pracy. Urodzony w 1892 r., dyplom lekarski uzyskał w 1916 r. na Uniwersytecie Kijowskim. Przed II wojną światową pracował i kształcił się między innymi w Wilnie i Lwowie. W 1945 r. przybył do Łodzi. Początkowo związany z Uniwersytetem Łódzkim, uzyskał na nim tytuły profesora nadzwyczajnego w 1946 r. i zwyczajnego w 1949 r. Następnie związał się z Akademią Medyczną (ob. Uniwersytet Medyczny), gdzie kierował Katedrą Histologii i Embriologii w latach 1950-1962.
