Description
Captain Albert Ball, VC, DSO, MC. Notts and Derby Regt, and RFC, 1919.
Albert Ball was one of the most famous British fighter aces of the First World War and a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross. He was awarded the medal as a result of taking part in 26 aerial combats between 26 April and 6 May 1917, during which period he destroyed 11 hostile aircraft, brought two down out of control, and forced several others to land. Ball was killed on 7 May 1917 near Douai after his plane crashed behind enemy lines during a dogfight in deteriorating visibility. He was only 20 years old at the time of his death. Edward Newling's portrait of him was conducted posthumously.
