Summary

Description
English: Crystals formed during production of a Song Dynasty “hare’s fur” glaze on a ceramic tea bowl, as seen in a petrographic thin section under transmitted plane polarized light. Long clear needles of anorthite (a calcium-aluminum silicate) grow out from the edge of the ceramic body towards the top of the glaze. Small brown iron oxide crystals from an application of iron colorant on the glaze surface have precipitated onto the upper edges of the anorthite. Viewed under a Nikon Eclipse 50i POL microscope, captured with a QImaging MicroPublisher 5.0 RTV CCD camera.
