Summary

Description
English: The Udayagiri Caves are twenty rock-cut caves near Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh from the early years of the 5th century CE. 19 of them are Hindu cave temples, 1 is a Jaina cave temple, both co-located. These contain some of the oldest surviving Hindu temples and iconography in India, as well some of early inscriptions. The iconography includes those for Vishnu, Devi, Shiva along with other Vedic and Puranic deities. The reliefs narrate Hindu religious legends as well show secular scenes such as daily life, lovers and meditating people. These images are photographs from the appendix of a book published in 1880 by Alexander Cunningham for the Archaeological Survey of India, Volume 10 (personal copy). The photographed plates are XVI through XIX. The link below is provided for easier verification of the publication date and PD-Art-100-70 category confirmation.
