Description
English: Two crusader gold bezants minted in the Kingdom of Jerusalem in the 1250s. The left bezant bears a Greek cross surrounded by Arabic inscriptions. On the right bezant is the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) surrounded by Latin inscriptions. Gold dinars issued by Fatimid caliphs had been copied by the crusaders. When a papal legate arrived in 1250 and intervened, Islamic legends were replaced by Christian ones (in Arabic or Latin), Hegira dates by Christian ones (in Arabic words), and Christian symbols were added.
