Description

General Steel Industries' administration building, located at 1417 State Street, Granite City, Illinois, was originally built by Commonwealth Steel Company and finished in 1926. In 1929, Commonwealth Steel was acquired by General Steel Castings Corp. (became General Steel Industries, Inc. in 1961). The building became the company's headquarters in 1948. Part of what remains of the company's foundry can be seen behind the building. This property was purchased by National Steel Corp. subsidiary, Granite City Steel Company, in 1974.
