Summary

Description
English: Tomb monument of Sir Gawen Carew (c.1508-1584) and his third wife, Elizabeth nee Norwich (d. 1594) in the chapel of St John the Evangelist, Exeter Cathedral. The monument is dated 1589, but was heavily restored in 1857. The third effigy, in a recess at the base, depicting an armoured man in cross-legged pose, has traditionally been identified as Sir Gawen's nephew, Sir Peter Carew (d. 1580), but more probably represents Adam Montgomery de Carew, the Carew family's semi-legendary founder.
