File information
Description

North Bay was used a checkpoint for the flight crew during the Ottawa to Sault Ste. Marie leg of the first crossing of Canada by airplane. No photographs were taken of the overflight at North Bay. This image shows the F.3's arrival at the Red River, Manitoba, after Sault Ste. Marie. The site had been mistakenly described as Sault Ste. Marie by some Canadian archives sources. The Wing Heritage Office at 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base North Bay has verified that this is the Red River. Both pilots were Canadian Air Force.

Other information

It was a segment of the record made by the Canadian Government of the first crossing of Canada by airplane. The country was (and still is) mostly wilderness. The flight was meant, in part, to prove that the relatively new technology of aircraft was a viable means to explore the country, patrol its sovereignty, and open up accessibility to communities near and far flung throughout the dominion. Under the 50-year rule governing unclassified Government of Canada images, this photograph is in the public domain, and can be used without charge.
