In 1933, a competition for the Exhibition House in Ankara was opened by the National Economy and Providence Community. The competition announcement declared that the proposal must be in modernist style, reflecting the design tendency of the period. A project by Şevki Balmumcu was awarded 1st prize and was built immidiately. In the 1940s the building was renovated by Paul Bonatz who turned it into an opera house changing the original function and style. This transformation of the building shocked Balmumcu and the experience almost led him to close his architectural practice.
